Maryam and the announcement

Maryam was honoured and given the announcement of the Messiah, Isa son of Maryam. The Qur’an describes an extraordinary birth without a human father.

Words from the cradle

When Maryam returned to her people, Isa spoke of being Allah’s servant, given scripture and made a prophet. He spoke of prayer, charity, and kindness to his mother.

Signs by Allah’s permission

He was given signs, including healing and raising the dead by Allah’s permission. The repetition of that qualification matters: the Qur’an distinguishes the messenger from the source of his power.

The disciples

His disciples affirmed belief and offered their help. The Qur’an also recounts their request for a table of food and Isa’s prayer, with a warning concerning responsibility after a sign.

A message of worship

The Qur’an honours him as Messiah and messenger while rejecting the claim that he is God. Isa’s own words in the account direct worship to Allah, his Lord and theirs.

Relationship to Yahya

An authentic account of the ascent describes Isa and Yahya as maternal cousins. The explorer records the relationship without inventing the names of the intervening relatives.
